Pole Barn Shop and Breezeway Insulation Project in Leavenworth, Kansas
Project Overview
We recently completed a closed cell spray foam insulation job on a new construction pole barn shop and breezeway in Leavenworth, Kansas. This out-building was designed to function as a workshop and garage, and the homeowner wanted it to be comfortable to work in year-round—regardless of the weather outside.
Scope of Work
Our team installed 2 inches of closed cell spray foam insulation on the roofline, gable ends, and all exterior walls of the shop, being careful to avoid the overhead doors as requested. For the breezeway connecting the structures, we applied 2 inches of 2lb closed cell foam to both exterior walls and the roofline. The goal was to create an effective thermal barrier, air seal, and vapor barrier throughout these critical areas.
Why Closed Cell Spray Foam Was Chosen
Closed cell spray foam insulation is ideal for a pole barn or shop like this because it offers a high R-value per inch and creates a tight seal against air and moisture infiltration. In out-buildings, drafts and condensation can be real problems—especially in the Kansas climate, where summers are humid and winters can get bitterly cold. The closed cell foam not only insulates but also strengthens the structure by adding rigidity to the building envelope.
Benefits for the Homeowner
By insulating with closed cell spray foam, this new shop will stay much warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The air barrier stops drafts and dust from sneaking in, and the vapor barrier helps prevent moisture problems that can lead to mold, rust, or wood rot. This means the homeowner can comfortably use the shop for woodworking, auto repair, or any project no matter what the weather does outside. Energy costs will also be lower since the heating and cooling systems won’t have to work nearly as hard to keep the space comfortable.
What Made This Project Successful
A successful insulation job comes down to thorough prep work, correct application, and paying attention to the details. We worked closely with the builder to coordinate the timing of our installation so we could apply the foam directly to the metal and wood framing before any interior finish work started. This allowed us to get a perfect seal in all the key areas and avoid any missed spots. The homeowner now has a versatile, comfortable shop space that will last for years to come with minimal maintenance.
